To Whom It May Concern,
I would like to express a concern regarding TriMet bus driver Dan
Christensen on the following two items:
1) Dan Christensen's instructions to the general public for a
specfic
cyclist to be killed. In a post titled "PORTLAND! KILL THIS
BICYCLIST",
Christensen provides a photograph of the cyclist and states :
"*However as a holder of your life I think now after long hours of
contemplation I shall exercise the death option. In closing I would
like to
say that though I can only keep my fingers crossed and hope that
someone out
there takes me up on my plea, I will be lucky and blessed if
someone does."*

It is very difficult to support TriMet as an organization when its
employees
keep crossing every line imaginable. Coupling Christensen's
solicitation for murder and racism with Al Margulies's filming in
women's
bathrooms, discrimination against the disabled and it seems the
only embarrassment TriMet drivers have yet to commit is drug
trafficking on
bus routes.

Hey,
Kind of a weird problem. There's a Trimet driver, Al Margulles, that frequently video tapes women on his bus routes. Its creepy, not like scary movie creepy, but like old-pervert-down the lane creepy. I run into him a few times a week and at first I thought he was just outgoing, now I think he is creepy and a bit of a stalker with this camera. I try not to interact with him, but I have to board the bus from the front and walk right pass him and his creepy camera that is often pointed at the ass of female passengers. A while ago he gave me his phone and email so today I thought I would send him an email nicely asking him to stop filming while biking. He sent two emails in response, one was just a link to his personal blog where he posted a video of him verbally insulting some other person who apparently criticized him. I think he meant the response as a threat that if I tell anyone about the crap he is doing he will slander me on line. Also, considering how long he has been filming passnegers, who the fuck knows what video he has. I am really concerned that he might have an upskirt video that he will post online (if he hasn't all ready).
I thought Trimet had rules against stalke drivers. Guess I was wrong. I CC'ed Al on this email because I want that sick little pathetic fuck to know that I am not going to be scared into silence.

The video of you driving a bus and giving an interview for your own blog was the final straw for me. For far too long, you have harassed people with your self-appointed status as some creepy mix between a trimet spokesperson and stalker. Who knows what exactly you have been filming. Shit, I wouldn't be surprised to find out that you have been making up-skirt videos and beating off at home.
I tried to be police and nice by sending you an email that for you to stop filming while you were driving the bus. I was really polite too and didn't mention the fact that you video tape all the women like some closed serial rapist looking for his next victim. Rather than getting the hint and knocking it off, you you send me a link to a video of you lambasting someone who criticized you unsafe driving and creepy behavior? What type of limp dick threat is that? If I complain to Trimet about your stalker tendencies and shitty ass driving, will you post a rant about me next?
Never talk to me again. Never email me again and if any videos of me on your bus show up on the internet, I will have your balls for a bike ornament. Next time you ask a bus passenger for her number, try not to have the camera pointed right at her ass. And take a shower, you smell as bas you look.

I have been following the Trimet/Bicycle discussion on Bike
Portland and Rantings of a Trimet Driver blogs. As much as I am
pleased to see some constructive dialog occurring, I am horrified
by Mr. Margulles' blatant disregard for the safety of his
passengers and other road users.
There is no excuse for Mr. Margulles to distract himself from the
safe operation of the bus entrusted into his care. Far too many
lives depend on the alert and attentive care of a bus driver for
distractions to be tolerated as standard operation procedure. The
fact that Mr. Margulles distraction was his participation in
creating a personal podcast underlines Mr. Margulles' distorted
value system. There is nothing Mr. Margulles has to say that is
more valuable than the lives of the people his continuing
negligence endangers.
Why Mr. Margulles could not wait the bus was stopped, or when he
was no longer on his work shift to record his unprofessional rant
is beyond comprehension.
The fact that Mr. Margulles uses his seemingly Trimet approved and
funded podcasts to lash out at members of the public deteriorates
public trust in Trimet. A public employee has no right to retaliate
or intimate the public for engaging in good faith efforts to
address public concerns.
Besides the blatant safety and retaliation aspects of Mr.
Margulles' unprofessional conduct, there is a public employee
ethics concern. Public empolyees can not ethical use work time for
personal projects or outside employment.
Mr. Margulles' improper conduct distracts from the constructive
dialog occurring to address mass transit safety matters.
Regrettable, Mr. Margulles' hard charging commitment to improper
conduct on and off the clock means that there are few, if any,
viable resolutions that include Mr. Margulles' employment in a
public capacity.

I wrote the following letter to the station and posted it to the KATU website.

I just saw your report on my blog and am deeply disappointed that you did not let me speak to this story.
Although you did contact me I do not get home until late at night and was too tired to deal with any more media stories.
I'll say the same thing to you that I said to KGW, at no time did I endanger any passengers on any bus I drove and the fact that the media has decided to cover this "flame war" is disgraceful.
The complaints all came from BIKEPORTLAND.ORG members who just wanted to shut me up because I was sick and tired of them lying and embellishing complaints against Trimet bus drivers.
There has never been even one complaint from an actual passenger who rides any of my buses regarding this subject.
My driving record is my defense.
The only people that have any authority in this matter are TRIMET management personnel who make the rules for me, not the media and not KATU!
Contrary to popular belief Trimet management represents decades of experience in handling issues relating to transit operators and operations.
Trimet's overall safety record is above industry standards bringing into question the media's motivation with stories such as this.

I'm a reader of your blog and have been for 2 years now. Although I do not always agree with the things you do and say, I agree that you have done nothing wrong by being videotaped while driving. I am a fellow transit fan, and photographer. As a photographer, this story is extra important to me, as it may jeopardize this hobby of mine. Reading that "The complaint has led to a new policy change. Soon bus drivers won't be filming on-camera interviews." worries me, as I fear that this new change in policy may result in drivers no longer permitting my photography in fear of their jobs. I hope this does not become the case, as I would be deeply saddened to lose this hobby.
I hope that things turn out good for you, and that the public and media don't eat you alive, because I believe what you do is not only safe, but informative. I have learned so much about both whats great and whats horrible about trimet.

I had decided that I would not talk to Marcus any longer since there really doesn't seem to be any usefulness in it. But over at Bojack I made the following comment:

Nobody was upset about any of this stuff till I started engaging at bikeportland.org.
It was all posted publicly and many a viewer got a good laugh at these videos, which is what many of them were intended to do.
I'm not gonna debate you Marcus, your accusations speak for themselves.

Rose Village: Henry Willis says his daily display of used bikes for sale isn’t a business — although he has a state business license. The city of Vancouver disagrees.
Rose Village: A renegade bicycle business based on somebody’s front lawn should have bit the dust by the end of this month. Marcus Griffith of Arnada pursued a long-standing complaint against Henry Willis, who’s been operating the “Old Bike Man” shop near East 25th Street and Fort Vancouver Way — just behind Burgerville — for years. According to correspondence from Vancouver police officer Drue Russell to Griffith, Willis has “continued to deny that he was running a business, even though he is buying and selling bikes, displaying multiple bikes with price tags, obtained a business license from the state and has established a history of police reports” regarding purchase and sales of stolen bikes. Russell eventually appealed to Willis’ landlord, Robert Wood of F Street, who promised to resolve the matter before July.
